Welcome to the Edwards Lab Wiki.
Rob Edwards is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Sciences Department and Computational Sciences Research Center, and is an Adjunct in the Biology Department at San Diego State. This wiki is set up to provide information about our lab, within our lab, and also to let us put up data to share.
About the Edwards Group
The Edwards Bioinformatics Group, part of the Emerging Technologies Center and Center for Microbial Sciences at SDSU, has been at the forefront of genome sequencing, analysis, and annotation for several years, with a primary (but not sole) focus on microbial genomics. (Learn more about microbes at Wikipedia). The group has been instrumental in developing software to understand what microbes are doing based on the information in their genomes. The SEED database is the most advanced way of identifying the functions of individual proteins or groups of proteins, and has been developed be Edwards working with researchers at Argonne National Laboratory and the Fellowship for Interpretation of Genomes. Rob has strong ties to these groups and may be able to assist with access to summer internships at Argonne National Laboratory for qualified students.
Working with Forest Rohwer in the Department of Biology, the Edwards Group has developed several applications to analyze metagenomic sequence data. [Learn more about metagenomics at Wikipedia]. In particular, the SEED database was adapted to house metagenomics data. The old installation is still available. The pipeline to generate this data was converted to a fully autonomous end-to-end solution available from Argonne.
We are also interested in high-performance computing applications. Through connections to super computer centers at Indiana, Argonne, and San Diego we are working on interfaces to the TeraGrid project. This access will provide all users, regardless of expertise, skill, or comfort level with access to large clusters and high-performance computing.
